Chester and North Wales CTC has a new Club shirt!
Chester and North Wales CTC has an exciting new Club shirt. The yellow, black and white colours, combined with a 'fracture design', make sure it is highly visible to other road users. There is a brand new individually designed logo on the rear of the shirt with the name of the Club in both English and Welsh, and the original CTC logo is included on the front and rear of the shirt. The 'Cycling UK' logo is also on the front of the shirt. All these features make the shirt very desirable for your 2018 cycling!
The Club has obtained a substantial discount from Impsport, the supplier of the shirt, and has contributed an additional generous subsidy. To take advantage of this discounted offer you must place your order before 25th February 2018.

Chester and North Wales AGM 5th November 2017
Congratulations to Erin Spray
At our AGM, 11 year-old Erin Spray was presented with the Cycling UK 'Young Achiever of the Year Award' by Cycling UK Trustee, Welna Bowden. Her parents and sister Ella also attended the meeting. Erin had been unable to attend the 'Big Bike Celebration' held in Birmingham to collect her award.
Erin and her father Chris had arranged a fund-raising cycle ride from Lands End to John o' Groats. They completed the mammoth journey during three weeks in the summer, raising an impressive £5,400 for charity. Erin was warmly congratulated by Welna and members at the meeting for her magnificent effort.
In addition, on 19th October at the Palace of Westminster, Erin was among twenty-four young people from across the UK who were recognised by the Brtitish Citizen Youth Awards for their extraordinary contribution to society, charities and good causes. Bert Bailey Memorial Veterans' 100-mile Ride (BBMV100) – 1st July 2018
The date of the event is Sunday 1st July 2018. In 2018 the BBMV100 is using an electronic entry system. Due to holiday arrangements of the organisers and the need to finalise catering arrangements, the strict closing date for entries is Tuesday 5th June 2018, three weeks before the event. Treacherous Road Conditions – Riders Beware!
Farm vehicles are commonplace at this time of year – and coupled with a lot of rain many lanes become muddy and sometimes dangerous. A rider has reported that three riders, one of whom had to go to hospital, came off their bikes in similar circumstances at a location between Frodsham and Crowton on Crewood Common Road. He reported that "....the local farmer has been carrying out work in the fields at the bottom of hill for the past couple of weeks and spreading mud on the road. On Crewood Common Road, just after Oak Farm as you descend towards the Weaver and before Cliff Lane, the road becomes progressively more muddy. This was not too bad at the top but became even more slippery as we descended down the hill. Any unsuspecting cyclist would cycle past the farm, slowing as the conditions get muddier (as they often do by farms) without realising that conditions worsen after the brow of the hill. The only practical way down this hill is to dismount at the top and walk down".
This is a timely reminder for riders to be aware of the possibility of such conditions on all our lanes. Take care and safe cycling!
A Special Year for Wednesday Riders in 2018
2018 is an important year for Wednesday Riders. It will be 35 years since Charles Allen founded the group originally known as the Ledsham Section. Each year the Wednesday Riders have a special Charles Allen Memorial ride starting at Hadlow Road Station. Next year (2018), in addition to the visit to Hadlow Road, an Anniversary Tea will be included – details will be publicised here when they are finalised.
On 20th June 2018 there will be a special commemorative ride featuring both a 100 mile and a 100km challenge ride to Audlem. These will be group rides over flat(ish) courses and at a pace to suit all.

CONGRATULATIONS! CAERNARFON BYPASS VOLUNTEER GROUP
At the Cycling UK Big Bike Celebration held in Birmingham on 7th October, the Caernarfon Bypass Volunteer Group was awarded Cycling UK's highest honour for outstanding service to cycling. The Group won the 'Best Campaign' category and also won the Arthur Moss Medallion for the Best Volunteer overall award, a great achievement! The Group gave evidence at the Caernarfon Bypass Public Inquiry where they found close allies in Sustrans Cymru, the British Horse Society, The Ramblers Association, and the charity Antur Waenfawr which employs adapted cycles in client training. On the grounds of safety and continuity, each group stressed the need for a bridge or underpass at the Goat roundabout, Llanwnda. Chester and North Wales CTC Tourist Competition team
At the same Cycling UK Big Bike Celebration, the Ch&NW CTC team, comprising Paul Mills, Terry Davies, Steve Larwood and Lowri Evans, was the clear winner of the 2016 Tourist Competition and attended the awards presentation in Birmingham. Paul Mills was first overall winner and also first Veteran, and Lowri Evans was first lady and 1st lady veteran in the competition. Full results are available on the Cycling UK website.

Chairman's Meet – The White Horse, Churton NYD 2018
Our traditional New Year's Day Meet has been renamed the 'Chairman's Meet' and is still on New Year's Day. The venue is again at the White Horse in Churton. Please arrive between noon and 12:30pm. There is plenty of bike and car parking at the pub. Traditionally there will be a Hot Pot (normal and veggie + red cabbage etc) as last year and will cost no more that £8. A local group will leave Christleton Pond at approximately 10:30am. All of our Chester and North Wales CTC groups are invited. There will also be presentations of the Chester and North Wales CTC Trophies to the highest placed lady (Lowri Evans) and gentleman (Paul Mills) in the CTC Tourist Competition.

Hill Climb and Freewheeling Competitions – 30th September 2017
Competitors met up at Llysfasi College before starting the Hill Climb at 11:30am. Afterwards competitors cycled down to the village of Graigfechan for the Freewheeling Competition. The Freewheeling course ended outside the Three Pigeons pub in Graigfechan where results were announced and presentations made during lunch. The weather was slightly drizzly but a good turnout included several volunteers and supporters. Lowri presented prizes to the winners and thanked Coleg Llysfasi for use of the yard for registration and the Three Pigeons, Graigfechan, for their hospitality.

President's Ride, Annual Lunch and Trophy Presentation
24th September 2017
Neuadd Owen Village Hall at Cefn Meiriadog was the venue for the President's Annual Lunch and Presentation this year. Riders were fortunate to have dry weather until late afternoon. Just over thirty riders met at the Offa's Dyke Monument on the promenade outside the Nova Centre Prestatyn and, after a group photo call, rode a longer or shorter route to the venue. Six riders chose to start at Talacre. The President's Trophy for 2017 was awarded to Vicky Payne for her longstanding and valuable support of Chester and North Wales CTC. Many thanks to the catering team who provided refreshments and a superb lunch. Most appreciation is due to Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, who planned and organised this very successful annual event.

Corwen Audax Rides – 14th October 2017 – Reminder
This exciting annual Audax event in wonderful Cheshire and North Wales, organised by Vicky Payne for Chester and North Wales CTC, is taking place on Saturday 14th October. This is a reminder to enter your chosen challenge soon. There are three events on offer: The Clwydian, 212km – a scenic and continuously interesting route giving a taste of all the delights of North Wales, lakes, leafy lanes, hills (lots) and the sea; The Clwyd Gate, 138km – also a varied and scenic route through lovely North Wales, rivers, a hidden valley, leafy lanes, hills (lots) and the sea; and The Bala Mini-Bash, 60km a scenic and not too demanding ride – winding roads, narrow lanes, a beautiful lake and a few minor hills. Designed as an introduction to Audax riding and/or a delightful excursion into beautiful North Wales. Click here for more information about the rides.
President's Rides Routes – 24th September 2017
The routes for both the shorter and longer rides to the lunch venue are now available. The start and finish are at Offa's Dyke Monument, Prestatyn. The lunch and presentations are at Cefn Meiriadog Hall, nr. St Asaph LL17 0EY (pre-booked only).

'Momma Rides' – Saturday, 2nd September 2017
These rides have been blessed with storms and the tail end of hurricanes in the last few years so it was a great relief to have good, fine weather at last – and not a day too soon, as the following day was dreadful. Riders enjoyed one of three rides: Pistyll Packing Momma (209km, 3400m ascent), Momma's Mountain Views (137km, 2000m ascent) or Momma's Leafy Lanes (57km, for riders new to Audax riding).
Judging by feedback in the café afterwards everyone had a thoroughly good day out and were impressed by the quality and scenery of the routes. Click here to see a report and photos of this very successful event.
The Link – Important Announcement
Many thanks to Janet Jones who has kindly stepped forward as the new Editor of The Link, our Club magazine, and is proposing to complete a Winter edition by the end of October. She has previously been a member of the Link team, organising printing and postage of the magazine.
Please support Janet by sending articles, or any other items of interest for future additions of the magazine to [email protected]. She is appealing particularly for someone to contribute a regular technical article of about one page in each issue.

Cycling in Gran Canaria, February 2017 – Chris Smith

Last year Chris Smith wrote an article, published in The Link, about a 2016 family holiday in Gran Canaria where he had done some cycling whilst his family did touristy things. Once home, he invited other Ch&NW CTC and Two Mills riders to join him for another cycling break in 2017. Several people showed an interest in the trip and eventually fifteen people booked a holiday for themselves over roughly the same 2017 dates. This wasn't an organised holiday as such, just a group of people on holiday at overlapping times who all had a say in where they should ride and what they should do. With his previous experience of the area Chris was able to make various informed suggestions. CTC Birthday Rides – August 2017

The CTC Birthday Rides is an annual week of cycling held in August to celebrate the founding of the Bicycle Touring Club in 1878, later becoming the CTC. In 2012 the CTC became a registered Charity and in 2016 CTC was rebranded as Cycling UK.
The Birthday Rides in 2017 were held at the large Fire Service College site near Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds National Park. About thirty 'Two Mills' and 'Chester and North Wales CTC' members were at the event. Arrangements were excellent with en-suite accommodation, motor home parking, camping facilities, excellent food and evening entertainment. Apart from a slight hiccup with a water supply on the first day the event ran smoothly. On two days there were optional coach trips to Cheltenham and Gloucester, and Oxford. Click here for a selection of photos. They include some of the longer and shorter circuits around the Cotswold villages, giving a general flavour of the occasion. Photos are also included of visits to Kelmscott Manor (William Morris' summer home) and Snowshill Manor. Many congratulations to Brian Joyce who won 1st Prize in the Play-Doh competition and John Ferguson who won 2nd Prize in the Photo Competition.
Cycle-Rail Awards 2017: Now in its 13th year, the Cycle-Rail Awards recognise the progress made by the rail industry and associated organisations towards encouraging integrated use of bikes and train travel. The award presentations are attended by Transport Ministers, Members of Parliament and key colleagues from across the cycle and rail industries. The All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group also supports the awards, which have received significant coverage in the media, including trade and consumer cycle and rail press.
Every nomination submitted for an award will be entered into a free prize draw with a chance to win one of two Railcards and one third off rail fares for an entire year. Nominations close on Monday 11th September 2017 at 17:00. For information and nomination forms click here.

A540/A550 Two Mills junction improvements: Work has begun to improve the safety of cyclists, pedestrians and motorists at the notoriously busy A540/A550 Wirral junction at Two Mills. Benefits for cyclists and pedestrians will include:
- Pedestrian crossing from outside the Eureka Cafe over the central reservation to the old bus stop.
- 320 metres of a new shared footpath from the old bus stop side of the A540 to the Welsh Road A550 Two Mills Junction – and beyond, to the new bus stop opposite the Tudor Rose Hotel.
- A Toucan crossing over the A550 Welsh Road at the north side of the junction for cyclists and pedestrians to use to link up the new path.
- A pedestrian crossing from the Tudor Rose Hotel to the new bus stop.

Corwen Summer Audax Rides – 15th July 2017
There were three challenging rides on offer at this event, the Barmouth Boulevard 200km, the Brenig Bach 100km, and the Bala Parade 60km. Although the day dawned somewhat overcast and rather damp in complete contrast to the beautiful weather we had been enjoying, there was a good turnout and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day. Ch&NW CTC President's Rides, Lunch and Trophy Presentation

The annual lunch and presentation of the President's Trophy this year will be at Cefn Meiriadog Hall, near St Asaph (Grid Ref: LL17 0EY). Riders can choose a longer or shorter route, both of which are intended to be leisurely and sociable. They will start and finish at Offa's Dyke Monument, Prestatyn after a photo call at 10:45am for an 11:00am start. Tea and coffee will be available in a nearby café. We regret to announce the death in Spain in early July of MARTIN BROOKS. Martin, editor of THE LINK, had been suffering from cancer for some time but continued to work on our magazine until shortly before he died. On behalf of all members of Chester and North Wales CTC, Mike Cross offers sincerest condolences to Sarah and all members of Martin's family. His unstinting contribution to the work of Chester and North Wales CTC has been much appreciated and he will be much missed.

Bert Bailey Memorial Veterans' 100-mile Ride – 2nd July 2017
The 52nd Ch&NW CTC Veterans' 100 took place on 2nd July. The Event was named in memory of the late Bert Bailey who was one of our founder members in 1939 and a past-President. CTC Cymru Welsh Festival, Ruthin – 20th to 25th July 2017
A Reminder!
The CTC Cymru Welsh Festival will be held in Ruthin. For those coming for the whole event registration for riders is on Thursday 20th July in the afternoon. If you want to come for just one day that is fine – please could you arrive before 9.00am so that registration forms etc can be sorted out before the rides. Wild Wales Challenge – 27th August 2017
The Wild Wales Challenge is open to all riders, whether or not members of the CTC. It is organised on behalf of Cycling UK Merseyside (formerly Merseyside CTC). This year will mark the 33rd edition of this most prestigious cycling event, which features an 85-mile circular route – a different route each year, but always set amidst the spectacular scenery of North Wales. The WWC is NOT a race, but a traditional tourist challenge ride in which riders are invited to complete the course within a generous time allowance. Entries have now officially closed but there are still a few places left for late-comers. Contact Lowri Evans if you would like a late entry.

The Carden Arms, Tilston: One of our past much used 'watering holes', the Carden Arms at Tilston, has re-opened under new management. The pub manager is keen to cater for cyclists and promises cyclist-friendly healthy food, outdoor seating and dining, and will be arranging a cycle ride over the next couple of months centred around the pub. Chester and North Wales CTC – Corwen Summer Audax Event
Don't forget to challenge yourself on one of these three popular annual rides on 15th July:
The Barmouth Boulevard 204km with 3650m of climbing. A beautiful and challenging ride with glorious scenery. The route includes the Trawsfynydd Mountain road Bwlch y Groes and the Northern Hirnant Pass from Lake Vyrnwy.
The Brenig Bach 107km with 1920m of climbing. This classic ride visits some remote and beautiful areas of North Wales with stunning scenery throughout and excellent café stops. The last 20km are all downhill. A wonderful and stimulating day out enjoying one of the best 100km rides in Britain.
The Bala Parade 60km with 1000m of climbing. This is a lovely ride around Lake Bala designed as an introduction to Audax riding. There is a pub/café stop at the south-east end of the lake to complement a pleasant morning ride.
Wirral Loop Line reopens from Monday 19th June 2017
Following six months of work to replace track in the loop and under the riverbed, the Wirral line will fully re-open from Monday 19th June. From then, trains will once again be able to cross the river and all stations affected by the improvement programme will be in use. The Bob Clift Memorial Cheshire Cycleway Rides – 11th June 2017
There were two rides on offer at this Event, a 100-mile ride and a 50-mile ride. On behalf of all in Ch&NW CTC, I would like to thank Sue Booth and her team of helpers for their hard work in ensuring that these rides were such a success. Many congratulations also to Mike Green, winner of the Jim Skelding Trophy which is awarded to the youngest 100-mile rider.

Ch&NW CTC Caer a Gogledd Cymru Treasure Hunt – 28th May 2017
On behalf of all in C&NW CTC, I would like to thank Liz and Peter Conway for organising the Treasure Hunt on Sunday 28th May 2017. It is a pity that their hard work attracted only a few participants. In spite of that, it was enjoyed by all who took part, as they searched for clues in and around Delamere Forest starting and finishing at Lady Heyes Craft Centre, Kingsley – a new venue for this annual event. C&NW CTC/Audax Rides – Berwyns Rides 20th May 2017
The weather was glorious when riders signed in for the event at Willington Hall Hotel. The sunshine degenerated into heavy showers around the Prospect Tea Rooms, but then cleared up for the rest of the day. There were two rides to challenge entrants: 'Tour of the Berwyns' (210km) and 'Prospect Panorama' (135km). There was one fairly serious accident and a couple of minor issues which are being resolved. In spite of these, everyone said how much they enjoyed the ride and stunning scenery – which is what really matters! Make Chester's Hoole Bridge safer for pedestrians & cyclists:
a petition to Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC)
The footpaths on either side of Hoole Bridge are not wide enough for cyclists to share with pedestrians, leaving the roadway as the only route over, thus making themselves a physical obstruction to the heavy flow of traffic. A petition has been started that aims to see Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) agree to build two separate footbridges on either side of the existing structure, and turn the current pavements on the bridge into a safe cycleway. Hoole Bridge now carries over 21,000 vehicles a day, 87% of which are cars. The remainder of the traffic, involving light and heavy goods vehicles and buses, is said to be "a high percentage" for a route of that type. In 2009 alone nearly 300 cyclists crossed the bridge in a 12-hour period and almost 3,000 pedestrians. Footways on the bridge are 1.5m wide and "do not meet current standards". There is no separate provision for cyclists, and for pedestrians there is "just enough width" for two to cross side-by-side. "It is possible for a lorry wing mirror to clip a pedestrian if the lorry is running very close to the kerb" (John Violet, Chief Bridges Engineer report 2009). The road itself is too narrow for a cycle to pass at the same time as two cars are passing and many cyclists use the footway instead of the road. No action has been taken resulting from investigations and admissions. For further details and to add your name to the petition please click here.
Eureka Audax/C&NW CTC Rides – 22nd April 2017
Good weather at last for this popular Audax event that started and finished at the Eureka café. 94 riders in total challenged themselves in one of three rides. The Eureka Excursion at 215km was the longest, the second longest ride was Tea in Prospect at 135km, and the shortest was the Two Mills Twirl 68km, designed as a gentle introduction for riders to Audax events. Despite a problem encountered at Pulford level crossing all riders returned safely and enjoyed the rides.
Many thanks are due to the volunteers who helped to make this event such a success – Margaret Matthews, Graham and Vicky Payne, Anne Peek and her staff at Eureka café for remaining ever cheerful and helpful through a 13–hour day and not forgetting the efficient and important organiser of the event, David Matthews.

Two Mills Early Season Challenge Ride – 9th April 2017
This very successful annual event was organised by Janet Gregory for Two Mills (Wirral) group and took place on the 9th April. The event was part of the Cycling UK Challenge Ride Series and was designed as an early season 'challenge' or reliability ride Participants enjoyed especially warm, sunny spring weather to complete either the 50mile or the 50km course. The event also provided an ideal opportunity to display the new very attractive and eye-catching Two Mills tops. Look out for information about next year's event on Sunday 25th March 2018. Gwyl Seiclio Cymru 2017 Welsh Festival of Cycling 2017
The 2017 Welsh Festival of Cycling organised by CTC Cymru is returning to Ruthin. Ruthin lies in the Vale of Clwyd about 20 miles inland from the North Wales coast. The location gives scope for gentle rides in the valley or hillier rides taking in the Clwydian Range, Denbigh Moors, or the Berwyns. There will be a range of routes available, from short family rides to longer more arduous routes as well as some off-road routes. Several events will count towards the Tourist Competition. New Year's Day Meet 2018: This first-of-the-year event is now confirmed for 2018 to be held, as before, at The White Horse in Churton. The manager has made every effort to make us very welcome on previous visits on New Year's Day and on other occasions. Cyclists are now being offered free refills of hot drinks (apart from New Year's Day) and a 10% discount on meals. Secure parking for cyclists is an added bonus. Wednesday Riders ride to Great Bear Distribution, Deeside 15th March 2017
Wednesday Riders' ride on 15th March included a visit to Great Bear Distribution on the Deeside Industrial Estate, where riders had the opportunity to sit in a large articulated vehicle (LGV) and experience the visibility difficulties experienced by drivers of these vehicles. Many thanks to Justin and Dave, from Great Bear, and to Darren Harrison, the company's trainer, who patiently answered questions from many more cyclists than had been expected. Darren “hoped our visit gave us a better understanding of the driver's view point from the driving seat”. In addition Darren handed out informative and useful video discs. Wild Wales Challenge – 27th August 2017
The Wild Wales Challenge is open to all riders, whether or not members of the CTC. It is organised on behalf of Cycling UK Merseyside (formerly Merseyside CTC). This year will mark the 33rd edition of this most prestigious cycling event, which features an 85 mile circular route – a different route each year, but always set amidst the spectacular scenery of North Wales. The WWC is NOT a race – but a traditional tourist challenge ride in which riders are invited to complete the course within a generous time allowance.
Club entries are available for the Wild Wales up until the end of the month – entries will then be open to all. If Ch&NW CTC members want to ride the event please contact Lowri Evans C&NW CTC secretary who will then send the link to the on-line entry site.
Café of the Year 2016

The Café of the Year 2016 is the fourth time this competition has been held by Chester and North Wales CTC and the first time it has been awarded to a Welsh café. Pantri Bach Café in Pensarn, near Abergele received the most votes. The owner and staff of the café were presented with a commemorative certificate on Thursday 22nd February by Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC. The café was nominated by CTC members who visit the café regularly and who always receive a warm welcome and excellent service. Despite very wet and windy conditions, over twenty cyclists arrived for the presentation. The café owner Julie Williams, manager Kirsty Prosser and the staff were so delighted to receive the award that Julie immediately found a prominent place on the café wall for the certificate. As well as riders from the CTC there were cyclists from Rhos-on-Sea CC and Ruthin CC. Mike Cross, Lowri Evans, Glennys Hammond and Roy Spilsbury also attended the very enjoyable event. John Pegum: We are very sorry to report that our oldest member, John Pegum, died on Monday 13th February 2017. He was a D-Day Veteran and reached the grand age of 100 years. John was a founder member of Chester and North Wales and played a prominent part in the activities of Chester and North Wales CTC in post-war years. He was a regular contributor of articles to older editions of The Link, our club magazine. John was a belated but very worthy recipient of the President's Trophy for 2015 when he was 99 years old. He was unable to attend the President's Annual lunch and Presentation on 27th September, but was presented with the Trophy afterwards in his home. This handsome trophy was donated by Mrs Iris Mills in memory of her son Graham, who died suddenly in 2007, and was first awarded in 2009. Our condolences go to his family for their sad loss.
Café of the Year 2016
We are delighted that Pantri Bach Café, situated on the promenade at Pensarn, near Abergele, has been nominated 'Café of the Year 2016' by members. This is the fourth year an award has been made to a popular café – the first three awards being in Cheshire. We are especially pleased that the award this year will go to a Welsh café. Ten different cafés were nominated by members, showing a more enthusiastic support for our favourite watering holes than previous years. Pantri Bach received the most votes, beating Cleopatra's in Holt by only one vote.
Mike Cross (President of Chester and North Wales CTC) will present the proprietor and staff with a framed Certificate on Wednesday 22nd February at the Café (grid ref:116/943788). We hope that many members will make an effort to give their support at the suggested time of 11am at the café. Many thanks to all those who sent in their votes.

Supermarket of the Year Presentation 2017

The Chester Cycling Campaign (CCC) 2017 award for the most cyclist friendly supermarket has once again been won by Morrisons Supermarket in Saltney. The survey of ten supermarkets in the Chester area assessed the cyclists' facilities provided for the use of customers and employees.
Based on the practical experience of local cyclists, the CCC identified key criteria that are most important to cycling customers: for example, the number of bicycle stands, whether the stands are under cover, how close the stands are to the entrance of the store and if there is signage to the stands. The survey also looked at the provision of secure storage for staff cycles, a cycle to work scheme, lockers and drying area facilities and finally whether the store has a 'Bike Champion' to promote cycling for staff.
The purpose of the Chester Cycling Campaign award is not only to given recognition to the supermarket with the most cycle friendly facilities, it is also to use the collected information to provide feedback to each head office. More information is on the Chester Cycling Campaign website.

Route 568 Along the River Dee by the Cop Park: Sustrans Route 568 along the River Dee into Chester by the Cop on Sealand Road and New Crane Street is presently closed for cyclists and pedestrians. A development has restarted at the old lock gates between the canal and the river, and it is not clear how long the path will be closed. Chester Cycling Campaign is campaigning with Chester West and Chester (CWAC) to get this 'missing link' over the old locks reinstated, but no luck so far.

New Year's Day Meet, The White Horse – Churton
The New Year's Day Meet at The White Horse, Churton was by all accounts a very successful event thanks to David Matthews, the Event Organiser. The day started off wet and rather gloomy but by afternoon the sun arrived which meant more pleasant return rides to various parts of Wirral, North Wales and Cheshire. Sixteen riders met at Christleton pond and, together with riders and guests from other parts, the final number swelled to over fifty. A tasty dish of a meat or vegetarian hotpot with roast potatoes proved very welcome, but unfortunately not enough for latecomers. We hope to repeat visiting the venue in 2018.
Both Mike Cross and Glennys Hammond were unable to attend due to illness but David Ackerley, newly-retired from the Awards Committee, did the honours and presented a trophy to each of the highest placed Chester and North Wales male and female riders in the 2015 Cycling UK Tourist Competition. Congratulations to winners Lowri Evans and Paul Mills. Terry Davies was placed second in the men's category and Sarah Hamill second in the women's.

Café of the Year 2016
Most of our members have a café they enjoy visiting on their rides where the staff go the extra mile to please their cycling customers. You have the opportunity to vote for your favourite watering hole where the service, food and refreshment is excellent and deserves the Award. In the past we have presented it to Tilly's, Walk Mill Bakery and Café, and Meadow Lea Farm Coffee Shop, so they are not eligible this year. Each of the winners has been delighted to receive the award and proudly display their framed Certificate in their café – presented in each case by Mike Cross. Remember that Welsh cafés are equally eligible so let's have more votes.
Voting is only open until midnight on the 15th January so you only have a few days. All it takes is a quick email with the café's name to Glennys at [email protected].

Wednesday Riders Christmas Lunch 2016
The Wednesday Riders held their traditional Christmas Lunch with full Christmas fare at Trafford Hall on 14th December. Sixteen Riders came by bike and thirty-seven sat down to a superb lunch. We're sorry to hear of Martin's recent health setback and unplanned stay in Denia Hospital in Spain, but very pleased that it has not affected his positive attitude and always cheerful demeanor. Wirral loop line track renewal a brilliant result for cyclists!
Merseyrail has listened to its passengers and has decided to run a Bike Bus, which is a vehicle that can carry bikes and owners together. The Bike Bus will travel between Birkenhead and Liverpool at key times during Wirral loop line track renewal for customers travelling with bikes.
The Bike Bus will run between Hamilton Square station in Birkenhead and Moorfields station in Liverpool. There will be services every hour from both stations from early in the morning until late at night, capacity will be limited and buses will operate on a first come first served basis. Doreen's 80th Birthday Ride with Eryri Group
Doreen Lindsey has been the Eryri Group organiser for many years. One of our most esteemed members, she was awarded Volunteer of the Year for Wales in 2014 and has twice been awarded the Rose Bowl trophy, firstly for the Oldest Lady Rider in the Veterans' 100 in 2015 and also for the Oldest Lady Rider in the 2016 Triennial Veteran's 100.
Doreen celebrated her 80th birthday on the 12th November 2016. The Eryri group planned a lovely surprise when they turned up for their ride in matching T-shirts printed with 'Team Doreen'. North Wales Police – 'Operation SNAP'
Those of you living in Wales may have seen items on BBC News recently with the police empathising the need to drive safely, and reminding people about cyclists and vulnerable road users.
Chief Inspector Darren Wareing of North Wales Police – a keen cyclist – is launching Operation SNAP, a new initiative using plain clothes police on bicycles using video against close passing cars. Reckless drivers could be prosecuted through 'dash cam' evidence sent in by members of the public. Operation SNAP is being launched in response to the ever increasing submissions of video and photographic evidence from people who have witnessed driving offences. North Wales Police are encouraging members of the public to send in their footage by completing a newly-devised online form using this link. Click here for further information. Hill-climbing and Freewheeling Competitions – Saturday 1st October 2016
This very successful fun event is organised each year by our Club Secretary Lowri Evans. The Hill-climb started at Llysfasi College and the Freewheel competition started and finished outside the Three Pigeons Inn in Craigfechan. President's Rides, Lunch and Presentation – 25th September 2016
What an enjoyable annual event! Cyclists gathered at Walk Mill Bakery and Café to ride one of two distances to Tilston War Memorial Hall for a magnificent sit-down generous lunch. Riders this year were delighted to be joined as honoured guests by Paul Tuohy, Chief Executive of Cycling UK, and his wife Wendy riding their tandem. After lunch, Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, presented Reg Waud with the President's Trophy, which had been donated in memory of late President Graham Mills by Graham's mother. Reg played a major part in the design of Chester and North Wales CTC's tops and, more recently, lovingly and expertly restored a rare cast-iron CTC 'Winged Wheel' sign which is now preserved in Wirral Transport Museum in Birkenhead. Peter Williams' letter to Chester Chronicle, 15th September 2016: Peter Williams, Chester and North Wales CTC's esteemed Right to Ride Officer, has had a letter published in the Chronicle on page 38 of the issue dated 15th September 2016. His letter is entitled 'Go Dutch on cycling' and sets out suggestions by which cycling could be safer and healthier. He suggests that relevant bodies such as the Highways Department, working with planners and developers and health authorities, could create a more Sustainable Transport system. Lon Eiffion Traffic-free trail
The Bontnewydd bypass – the Goat Roundabout
Lon Eiffion is a scenic traffic-free route from Caernarfon to Bryncir and is used by both walkers and cyclists as part of National Cycle Network Route 8. The proposal to construct the Bontnewydd Bypass would mean that users of Lon Eiffion would have to cross two busy main roads at the Goat Roundabout. Last year the CTC, Ramblers, Sustrans and others mounted a campaign to ensure that cyclists and walkers using Lon Eiffion were protected when the Bypass came into being. Exhibitions are being held at the Celtic Royal Hotel in Caernarfon on 20th and 21st September and the Meinfod Hotel in Bontnewydd on 22nd and 23rd September providing an opportunity for people to have their say, share the concerns of all who objected last year, and join in objecting to the current proposals. All objections have to reach the Welsh Government by 13 October 2016, and should be sent to Orders Branch (qA1198563), Transport, Welsh Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NQ.

Corwen Summer Audax Rides – Saturday 16th July 2016
Vicky Payne's report on the Corwen Summer Audax rides – the Barmouth Boulevard 200km, Brenig Bach 100km and the Bala Parade 60km – shows that the event was very successful and enjoyed by the fifty-six riders who took part despite the weather. Triennial Veterans' 100-mile ride
This very successful event took place on Sunday 10th July 2016 organised by Laurie Mason. There were eighty-one entrants who set off in seven groups of riders every ten minutes from 8am after a send off by the Ch&NW CTC President, Mike Cross. Morning and afternoon refreshments were provided at Overton Village Hall, and a very welcome lunch at Llandrinio Village Hall. Trophies were awarded to the oldest Lady Rider, Doreen Lindsay, and the oldest Gentleman rider, Frank Savage. Click here to see a selection of photographs and here to see a Report of the Event. Triennial Veterans' 100-mile ride – 10th July 2016
I would like to thank Laurie Mason and his team of volunteer helpers for planning and organising this very successful 'Triennial Veterans 100-mile Ride', and ensuring the smooth running of the event on the day. Many riders expressed their appreciation for what was a very enjoyable day's ride, from those who took part for the first time, as well as from riders who live some distance away, and who make this event a regular fixture in their cycling diaries.

The enjoyment of such a large number of riders was clear to see. The late Bob Clift, creator of the Cheshire Cycleway and an outstanding touring cyclist, would have been proud.

Café of the Year 2016
Yes, it's that time of year again! Now is your chance to support your favourite cycling café so have a quick read of the rules below and email Glennys Hammond with your favourite café nomination. Remember that we have riding groups covering a wide area including Wirral, Chester, Cheshire and North Wales. The cafés we visit on our rides are really grateful for our support so let's show we appreciate their efforts! Tilly's, Walk Mill Bakery and Café, and Meadow Lea Farm Café have already won this accolade so unfortunately aren't eligible for this year's competition.
The rules are as follows:
- Only votes from individual members will be counted; block votes from groups are invalid.
- A member may vote for the café of his/her choice once only in a calendar year.
- The café that secures most votes will be presented with a Certificate from Ch&NW CTC.
- The winning café in any year will not be eligible for entry in the competition until 5 years have passed since its last win.
- The provisional closing date for entries is midnight 15th January 2017.

CTC Cymru Treasure Hunt and Map Reading Competition
Trefnant – 30th April 2016
After the wet weather endured in this event in 2015 it was hoped that competitors would not be reduced to handing in answer sheets made of papier-mâché in 2016! There was bright sunshine in the Vale of Clwyd at 8:45 but shortly after 9:00am the skies were grey, the rain was pouring down in Trefnant. However, Crossroads café was able to provide tea and coffee to try to lift the spirits and by 9.30, when the first riders were allowed to start, it had stopped raining. Eureka Café 23rd April 2016
Riders were very lucky with the weather – an improving forecast all week with a dry, mostly sunny day. All in all a very successful and safe set of events in which returning riders said how much they enjoyed the day out. It is intended to repeat these rides in 2017 at a similar time with similar routes. Details to follow when available – hopefully within the next few weeks. 'Café of the Year 2015' is Meadow Lea Farm Coffee Shop, Mickle Trafford

On Wednesday 3rd February, Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, presented Barbara (owner) and her staff at Meadow Lea Farm Coffee Shop with a framed certificate to display in the café. The cafe was voted 'Café of the Year 2015' by our members, several of whom attended the presentation. The Café is very popular with both walkers and cyclists because of its convenient position at the end of the Greenway in Mickle Trafford – as well as providing home-made cakes and a varied menu. Barbara was delighted to receive the award and acknowledged the loyal support of the cycling community.
New shared footpath and cycle path: Highways England has started work to install a new shared footpath and cycle path on part of Sustrans Route 563. The route comes up the A5117 from Ellesmere Port on its way to North Wales. After the roundabout with the M56 the route follows Powey Lane in a semi-circle coming back on to the A 5117 before it crosses the A540 via a Toucan crossing on its way to North Wales. The new path will be alongside the A5117. Work will take place in a number of phases and will be carried out between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday for approximately eight weeks. Temporary traffic lights will be in place throughout the scheme to carry out the project safely and maintain traffic flow. The work being undertaken is not yet signed. Highways England say the new route will improve safety and provide a convenient link for pedestrians and cyclists. More information will be posted here when it is available. Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, recently received a telephone message from founder member, 99-year-old John Pegum, winner of the 2015 President's Trophy. John wished to thank Martin (Link Editor) for sending him his excellent latest edition of The Link. John, who is our oldest member, particularly asked Mike to pass on his greetings and best wishes for a very happy, trouble-free cycling year to all Chester and North Wales members. He recalled with pleasure the years when he rode with Chester and North Wales companions. Mike echoes these sentiments and sends his own best wishes for 2016 to all. (Information from Mike Cross)

Wrexham Reivers – January 2016 rides: On Saturday 19th December forty-five of the Wrexham Reivers and Café Hoppers, many of whom rode to the venue, enjoyed their Christmas dinner at the Ponderosa. The weather was so unseasonably warm that some rode up not wearing coats. The rain that came later rather changed things for the ride back down. There was no snow at the top of the Horseshoe Pass this year, however to make up for this Terry Davies rode out dressed as a snowman. Click here to see the January Rides.
