Tower Wharf Chester – Promenade Closure

Repairs to Tower Wharf Promenade (boardwalk) alongside the River Dee near Sealand Road in Chester will begin from Monday 10th December. Many cyclists have fallen and injured themselves due to its slippy surface so repairs are badly needed. The boardwalk is part of Sustrans Route 568 and will be closed for repairs due to deterioration of the timber decking and support beams. The work is expected to finish in spring 2019. A540 Safety Improvements for Cyclists
Sign this petition Please!!

Our Ch&NW CTC Right to Ride Officer has been petitioning for improvements to the A540 for cyclists for over ten years, where the road has experienced a large number of serious accidents involving cyclists. Highways England spent £540,000 recently on safety improvements to the A540/A550 (Two Mills) junction. A very dangerous section of this high speed road still exists between Puddington Lane and the A540/A550 junction. As part of the improvements undertaken approximately forty years ago a short section of cycle path was installed – but the hazard on this stretch of the A540 remains. This existing 475 metre long path between Puddington Lane and the Highway England new cycle path needs to be repaired and reinstated as a matter of urgency. Please click here for further details and to sign the petition.

The timing of the Chairman's Meet has been changed to reflect the shortened hours of daylight and possible problems cycling home in darkness. More information about meeting places for rides to the pub will be provided nearer the time.

Time to Vote for Café of the Year 2018 – Reminder

January 15th 2019 is the deadline for you to vote for the 2018 Café of the Year. Previous winners have been Café Fresh at Dunham-on-the-Hill (2017); Pantri Bach, Pensarn Beach (2016); Meadow Lea, Mickle Trafford (2015); Walk Mill, Stapleford (2014): Tilly's at Bunbury (2013). As five years have elapsed, Tilly's is again eligible for consideration but none of the others.

At last year's Annual General Meeting (C&NW CTC AGM) it was proposed there should also be a 'Pub of the Year' competition. However, with the rate of pub closures and turnover of Landlords and Landladies, please make sure you vote for a pub that will still be open – and still welcoming cycling groups – in early 2019!

Please register your votes for 'Café of the Year' and 'Pub of the Year' with Glennys Hammond.

Corwen Summer Audax rides – 14th July 2018

Despite an early morning mist, the day proved to be lovely and warm with little breeze to speak of. The turnout of sixty-six riders was excellent and the day went by without a hitch. There were three rides of varying lengths on offer to challenge riders. The Bala Parade was a shorter and gentler ride in lovely countryside designed as an introduction to Audax riding. The Brenig Bach was a very hilly ride in surprisingly remote countryside, and The Barmouth Boulevard was a long, hard and hilly ride, again crossing remote areas. Returning riders commented on the wonderful scenery and said how much they had enjoyed their rides.

Many thanks to Vicky Payne for organising these very successful, annual rides.

Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100 – 1st July 2018

We had glorious weather for this event although some may have thought it was too hot for such a distance. The event wasn't so well attended this year for a number of possible reasons, but everyone who took part enjoyed the route, the meals, and refreshments provided at various points along the way. Many of the riders stayed behind to receive their certificates from Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, and to see trophies awarded to the oldest female and male riders who completed the course. Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100, 1st July 2018: Congratulations to all those who took part in this annual event which lost none of its character in spite of having less than fifty entrants this year. Our own Doreen Lindsey was a worthy winner of the trophy for the oldest lady rider. There cannot be many women capable of riding 100 miles when in their 80s. Well done! Special thanks are due to Organiser Laurie Mason and his team of helpers. Laurie's work over many months ensured this event's continuing success.

Poor behaviour by cyclists – request for information!

The Club has received a notice from Cycling UK National Office concerning seriously unacceptable behaviour by an unknown group of cyclists who passed through Bunbury last Sunday 17th June in the afternoon. The cyclists used the village hall toilets without permission and left them in a dirty condition requiring the assistance of the regular cleaner. The complainant recognised that many groups of cyclists pass through the village, that most are polite, and that identifying those responsible may be difficult. This discourteous and undesirable behaviour has resulted in the village hall booking officials deciding to refuse all future requests from cycling organisations. Such is the damage caused to the many by an irresponsible few. If anyone has any further knowledge of the incident please contact Lowri Evans or Cycling UK National Office. It would be appreciated.

Important Notice – Audax Rides from Willington Hall, Saturday 19th May

"The parking arrangements at Willington Hall have changed this year. Enter through the main entrance from the Kelsall side and continue down the drive past the first left turn into parking bays further down the driveway. Please do not park in the traditional place near the Tarporley direction entrance as this area is required for a wedding party. Registration is in the usual room on the R just beyond reception. A free drink of tea or coffee is provided for each rider. If you would like a bacon butty (£3.95) or banana (80p) then order at reception immediately on the R as you enter the hotel – before registration.

It would be appreciated if the Panorama Prospect riders stayed outside the hotel until 08:05 to enable us to get the 200km riders away smoothly.

We are to operate 'on site' validation of rides at the finish from 15:00. Please look out for us inside the hotel to get your ride signed off – if not obvious then ask at reception. Trust you all have an enjoyable and safe day out."

Chester Easy Riders: On Thursday 26th April, members of Chester Easy Riders celebrated the tenth Anniversary of their Club, known as CER to most! To show their appreciation, club members arranged a surprise presentation to Bryan of a bicycle sculpture at Ness Gardens café, followed by lunch at the Old Rathbone pub in Frankby. New Chester and North Wales CTC tops

I'm sure we are all waiting in anticipation for our newly-designed Club tops. The design proved to be very popular resulting in an order of 168 being placed with Impsport, specialists in cycling sportswear. The delivery date was estimated to be mid-April but due to an unexpected order for the Commonwealth Games the expected delivery date has been moved to the second week in May. We apologise for the delay. I expect we will still be delighted to receive and wear them when there is a clear improvement in the weather.
