Happy New Year - Blwyddyn Newydd Dda

New Year's Day Photos

As there will be no C&NW CTC Chairman's meet on New year's Day it has been suggested that people might like to take a photo at a location on a ride on New Year's Day (weather permitting) and send it with a note of the location to Sue Booth so that photos can be matched to a map [email protected]

Please remember to follow the current Covid Rules in force in your area.

All the best for 2021

The Link - Request for content

Hi everyone, hope you are all staying safe and well. I am planning to have the Summer Edition of The Link published around the end of August. I have a small problem at the moment, not enough to put in it! Now. I understand that things are a little different at the moment and nobody has had any unusual adventures so far this year but maybe you have a story up your sleeve about lockdown cycling, a funny incident or maybe you've been meaning to put together an article from a past trip/adventure. Please please would you put pen to paper/fingers to keys and send me your stories, anecdotes, tips, regrets, kit reviews by the end of July. Please send them to [email protected] Oh and don't forget the photos. Many thanks, Janet (the Link Editor)

COVID-19

Cycling UK has taken the decision to ask all its member and affiliate groups not to run any group activities, including club runs or events.

Therefore C&NW CTC riding must be suspended. We will be looking at events and sorting which will need to be cancelled asap, and which of those later in the year may be able to go ahead.

For further info please see the link below:

https://www.cyclinguk.org/news/what-does-covid-19-coronavirus-outbreak-mean-cycling

There is a very useful set of FAQ's which gives clarification on what activity can still go on:

Please look after yourselves & others; hope to be able to bring some better news in future.

Café of the Year 2019
RESULT

Nominations for Café of the Year 2019 closed on 15th January. There were many more votes this year from a list of twelve different cafés but the winner by a mile is Woodworks Garden Centre Café, Mold. After receiving a letter with the result of the vote from Chester and North Wales CTC President, Mike Cross, the proprietor and staff accepted the award. They replied:

"we are all so excited to be voted your best Café of the Year 2019 and can't thank yourself and your members enough. We thrive on customer service and great food in a relaxing environment for all. As this news breaks, I am pleased to announce that we are continuing our improvements to welcome more cyclists with even better facilities in the near future".

A notice will be posted here when a date for the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation has been arranged with the café.

WARNING: Early Morning Sun

TAKE CARE & SAFE CYCLING. It is that time of year when we should all be aware of the low sun and a possible inability for some to see what is directly in front of them, especially if it is the vehicle behind you that does not see you, noticable along the A540 southbound around the Burton turnoff and Eureka café.

Wanted - New Organiser(s) for Audax UK events from Corwen in North Wales

Barmouth Boulevard 200k + Brenig Bach 100k
Clwydian 200k + Clwyd Gate 130k
Bala Lake Circuit 60k

These well established, successful events have been held for several years now (25 years+ for the Clwydian). The current organiser wishes to retire after next year's events and we are looking for a replacement to ensure that the rides in July and October 2020 (dates can be changed for 2021) continue into the future.

We would provide full support and mentoring over the next couple of years to ensure a smooth and hassle-free transition. The new organiser(s) must be a member of Audax UK and would wish to get involved in the very worthwhile and satisfying task of organising these events.

The involvement would be roughly as follows:

2020 to July/October. Meet current organiser and get briefing as to how events are set up through AUK website. Be present at events, hand out brevet cards; assist during day and at finish. This is a long day from 07:30 to around 21:30. Plenty of opportunity to go cycling during the day before riders return.

Autumn 2020 through 2021. Decide dates for 2021 rides. Set up events with AUK and C&N.W CTC. Full support and guidance given by mentor. Supervise events in presence of mentor.

Later in 2021 through 2022 - set up your events for 2022. Mentor in background but always available to assist if needed.

2022 onwards---these are now your events---but we have 2 experienced organisers available for advice if needed.

If you are interested in becoming an organiser, then please send an email to [email protected] giving your name, phone number and stating briefly why you wish to get involved. One of our experienced organisers will then get in touch and discuss the role with you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Ps. Here are some notes about Audax rides. If you wish to know more, there is lots of info at our website audax.uk

"An Audax ride - known internationally as a Randonnée - is a cycle ride that has to be completed within a set time limit, including any stops to eat or rest. In most cases, riders have to maintain a minimum speed of 15km/h (some particularly long or hilly rides have a slightly lower minimum speed) and importantly a maximum speed of 30km/h. That's a little under 10mph and 20mph in Imperial measures.

It's not a race and individual riders' times are not published; if you finish within the time limit, you've succeeded.

Riders are expected to be self-sufficient. That doesn't mean that you have to ride alone or that you can't call on the services of a village blacksmith to help weld your frame back together, should the worst happen, but you navigate for yourself and if you do have any mechanical problems along the way, it's down to you to sort them or get yourself home.

Some rides offer food along the way; more often, you'll be finding your own sources of fuel, from cafes and pubs to village shops and service stations.  Throw in the hills, the British weather and distances ranging from 50km to 1400km and what might have sounded like a simple bike ride becomes more of a challenge - one that is appealing to increasing numbers of cyclists year on year.
